It’s been a week since I started this “21 day of VGM challenge”, and I’m still rolling! Here’s a bit easy one for me, but a nice challenge for a busy day!

This sketch features a couple of quests from “Quest Logs”:

  • Nap Time: Write a very short (less than 10 seconds) JRPG-style music cue for sleeping at an inn.
  • Kickin’ it Old School: Make a chiptune track! Remember your roots and bring back some of that 8-bit flavor.

I have a lot of ideas about this type of jingles, so first, I made a sketch track and I started it with Electric Piano sound which I thought is a good fit for “Sleeping at Inn” jingle.

Then I loaded 8bit /chiptune sounds to my DAW, tweaked the sounds, then arranged the original one with Electric Piano into the 8-bit version. To do this, I created three monophonic tracks.

By the way, I tend to be more careful with harmony when working on music when working with fewer sounds, like 8-bit music. Since you could only use 3 melodic sounds simultaneously, I don’t want to use unnecessary sounds in it.

For example, this is a super exaggerated one but this is using the same tones here and there and that made some tones stand out unnecessary :

So, you want to avoid that. (This applies to any musical composition, actually. When writing music, I try adding any tones with meaning. There should not be a tone that’s placed unnecessary. Sounds can add up easily, therefore when making music, less is better! )

Anyway, here’s my Day-8 “Nap Time” challenge along with “Old-school” challenge. I made the modern version and 8-bit style version of the “Sleeping at an Inn” music!

Thanks for checking, see you again soon!
