Today’s 21DaysOfVGM Challenge (Day 7) is very interesting. It’s called “Mini Boss Challenge” and Dan from VGM Academy introduced us to this fantastic artwork done by Abe Tena (abetena.com).

The challenge is “Use this artwork as a basis for tone, scene, and/or character when coming up with today’s musical idea!

I got up early and immediately started to work on this challenge.

First, I just sat down and imagining what I’ll do. I was looking at the picture, and imagine who they are. I decided the cat people on the bottom left corner are adventurers. Then the statue. Is it good or evil? Comical or serious? I decided that the statue is actually a good one, ancient and sacred one that the adventurers had been looking for.

I decided that the track sound mysterious and strong. I decided to use some ethnic instruments to represent the forest and the chorus for the ancient sacred power.

I opened up my DAW and added a lot of tracks, and loaded some instruments. I also imported the artwork as a reference movie in the project on DAW.

Then, I started to compose.

First I created percussion tracks. Then layered chorus, orchestra, Shakuhachi (Japanese flute), harp, and melodic metal instruments to play an arpeggio.

So this track took 4 hours and 20 minutes to finish…

But here’s my track for Day 7!

Let me know what you think!
