Say your character is walking down in the forest and at first the BGM might be somewhat mellow and slow. Then, enemies show up! As the battle begins, the BGM smoothly becomes more intense and dramatic. After your character defeats the enemies from the ambush, the music slowly fades back to the calm exploration track.  All of this happens without any stops or hard transitions in the music track.

I think this is a very cool technique to change the mood of the game seamlessly and subtly.

I decided to try working on a set of pieces that use this seamless crossfading technique to transition from one track to another.  The final result is two songs that are in the same BPM, the same length, and perfectly synched:

Track #1 – Mellow and calm version:

Track #2 – Aggressive and intense version:

To test this out, I got some help putting together a modified version of Unity’s Angry Bots demo that applies the effect.  When the player is in outside, the BGM is mellow. Then when he goes inside, it’ll switch to the intense one.  Here’s a demonstration of the outcome!
